First Law of Thermodynamics

The first law of thermodynamics also known as the law of conservation of energy, states that energy can be transformed from one form to another, but cannot be created nor destroyed. If an individual consumes a certain amount of calories those calories will be accounted for one way or another. They are used to produce energy, sustain life, give off as heat, or stored for later use.

The amount of calories consumed matches the calories expended

Energy can be stored away for later (potential) or used for work (kinetic). Potential energy gets stored in different forms in the body such as adipose tissue (fat) or glycogen in the liver and skeletal muscle. The ability to perform requires a constant supply of energy. The process of generating kinetic energy from sources of potential energy is what is know an as metabolism.
